Polite Records is a not-for-profit record label and was founded in 2005 by Phil Dodd. Phil made recordings on reel-to-reel, four track tape and mini-disc players and sold them on cdr with photocopied artwork. Meanwhile, Olly Watson and Henry Ireland were doing the same thing and playing in a band with Lauren Stewart, Felix Frith and William Ireland. They bought a pack of paper cd sleeves and got their friends to draw and stick on them so that each one was customised. They sold them for £1 each to cover costs.
Pretty soon, Henry and Olly were helping Phil to run Polite Records and they were playing folk songs together in a band called Grizzly & The Bears. They got together some songs and made a compilation and they played gigs in Bristol and Reading from about 2006 to about 2008. They made an album together called Poppit Sands and had a launch party in the basement of the old Cafe Kino in Bristol. They now meet every few months to record songs for a second album.
Grizzly and the Bears stopped playing together so much when Phil moved to Cheltenham. Olly and Henry were living together in Bristol and decided to start a new band called Tiger & Panda. they also started putting on gigs and art shows in the Benjamin Perry Boat House.
polite records makes small batches of each release and we price them to cover costs. all money made goes to those who put money in until they have made their money back, at which point all money is split equally between those who made the record.
